What inspired me to write the Morningstar Academy series?
I was on the hunt for a new "big" series idea and the Book of Revelations is relatively unknown, but with its cryptic messaging and foreboding characters, it fascinated me. It's truly the stuff that fantasies or horrors are made of. I had a feeling it would captivate readers as well.

Description

If you love Good Omens by Terry Pratchett, Penryn & the End of Days series by Susan Ee, and Fallen Academy by Leia Stone this book will become your next obsession!

From the moment I killed that demon, I knew my world would never be the same.

On a routine call to rescue humans, celestial warrior Gladriel kills a demon, a once-an-eon occurrence. And now its brethren plan to exact revenge. Despite the Almighty’s explicit order to let him handle things, after a month of his inaction, Glad feels ignored and breaks rank to fight back. But she’s expelled from Heaven for insubordination, as a result.

Glad finds herself enrolled at Morningstar Academy, a school dedicated to re-educating newly fallen angels. The core curriculum: making human lives a living hell, and compliance is mandatory. Never having encountered such radical ideas before, Glad finds her beliefs thoroughly challenged, but she refuses to capitulate. She just hopes she’s strong enough to weather the trials that will come with her defiance.

During one of her first classes, massive numbers of humans suddenly disappear from Earth and she and her new classmates are charged with discovering who is behind it. As they search for clues, she realizes these events are the beginning of an ancient prophecy foretelling humanity’s and her new home’s annihilation.

Despite her rebellion against the school’s rules, can Glad win over her new classmates and persuade them to help her stop it?

I love angels, fallen angels, demons books; it’s one of my favorite tropes, so I was immediately attracted to this book when I read the blurb and saw the cover, that cover!!! 😍 The world building is amazing, so different from other books I have read before; the plot so mysterious and intriguing and the characters, awesome!!!, love Glad and Kessien, as well as their friends… and the new friends from the Academy are on their way to be liked as well 😉 There is so much going on on both sides, and the mystery keeps growing; after that cliffy, can’t wait to read the next book!!! 🤩 Amazing start, for what promises to be a fantastic, must read series!!! ❤️

Not Your Typical Angel Read!😭💔😭🙏🏼💥 That Cover Though?🥵😍😇 (Read Using Kindle Unlimited) Cursed: Morningstar Academy, Book 1. Gladriel and her squad mates are the best of friends, and a tightknit fighting unit of angels. They generally split up and fight in pairs. So when they’re overwhelmed and her bestfriend is severely injured by demons, the squad but especially Glad, are devastated!😭 ‘He’ orders them to stand down and take no action as he’ll deal with it himself. He informs them that her bestie will still be needed, just in a different capacity now. Weeks pass without word of any retribution.😠 Glad loses her temper and hunts the offending demons down and gains what she feels is justice.😱 Her immortal life is forever changed that day as she went against ‘His’ word and committed a ‘true sin’!🥺 Glad is cast out in such a brutal and rushed way. Her team doesn’t get to say goodbye, the team leader does manage to spill his hidden feelings for her though!🙏🏼💘 The Fallen, which she now is, have always been the enemy, she has to wrap her head around that, plus try and live with how they treat humans. She’s always done everything to protect humankind, at all costs, while the fallen try to hurt and currupt them!😠 As she finally begins to settle in, the stirrings of an old prophesy she read from the forbidden library in her old life, looks like it might be in play. How can they confirm it, prove and then prevent it? As so many lives will be lost and not just Fallen and Demons!🥺💥 This is an amazing read. I was flicking pages so fast to find out ‘what’s next’. It’s truly energising, pulse pounging and morally grey, but that grey starts sliding into the rainbow because its all so wrong!🙈👀 This isn’t your ordinary story of good versus evil and angels versus demons. It’s complex and questioning and gripping and kind of terrorfying! That’s what makes it so captivating!😍 It’s absolutely unmissable and this authors best writing to date!⭐️

Lee’s writing is engaging and evocative. She does a terrific job setting up a scene for drama and action. Her utilization of setting to enhance the tone of the story was terrific. I was on the edge of my seat! This was, above all, a story about friendship. I loved Gladriel and Astread’s ride-or-die friendship, as well as the friendship of the whole squadron. I look forward to reading the next books in the series!!

This is the first book I’ve seen to explore how angels see each other, how they live and the challenges they face, which can lead to the big Fall! It’s an urban(ish) fantasy where humans and angels have changed places in the narrative… the humans are props and the story is about angels. Looking forward to book 2!

    slow paced
I received an advance review copy for free through BookSirens and the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I found the overall concept of the book to be interesting and engaging. I didn’t always love the writing and it made this a slow read for me. The main character is so stubborn its frustrating you just want her to back down a bit sometimes. BUT it makes her exactly who she is and I appreciate having a character with strong morals. Each of the side characters had their own unique personalities that consistently fit with them. I had a couple of chunks where I needed to skim (rare for me), the pacing was not working for me. Some of the most action packed scenes ended up feeling like they took an eternity because there was too much detail. The detail was usually validated but with each scene it became more and more exhausting. Consistently you are reading excess information that bogs the plot down.I did not take off any stars for that factor because I know that for some people this might be one of their favorite things about the book!

I LOVED this book! The author creates word pictures that made me feel I was right there…..I could “see” exactly what was going on. I got a little worried at one point where Glad, the main character, I thought was going to be instructed to inflict more pain on a couple grieving the loss of their child, but whew! The word pictures of the disappearances and war on Israel were so well done that I felt I was there.

Kicked out of heaven…and stuck in a demon academy?
    October 13, 2022
    • Dual POV
    • M/F
    • Demonic flying puppies (okay, that is solely my description)
    • Free will versus institutionalization
    • Cliffhanger ending
    • Paranormal apocalyptic mystery?

The art of self delusion: “I know I’m going against what the Almighty… suggested… yes, it was a suggestion, right?” In a universe where the angels have almost as much free will as humans, a ruler’s will (The Almighty) is still not exactly a suggestion. The Almighty is not a President. His city has the same decorative construction as Potala Palace or Macchu Pichu or Rome. Hubris.

Of course Gladriel is expelled. Upon arriving at the opposition’s version of Heaven (hint: no clouds or strumming harps), the guards describe the Almighty as “judgmental, unsympathetic, insensitive, inflexible.” It makes me wonder what the opposition is like? Shifty, indecisive, maleable? His minions have lack of choice?

Apparently, Below is boot camp. Now I remember why I changed my mind about joining the military! 😜 I don’t think I would have conformed. These Fallen treat her as scum, and I don’t know why she doesn’t give them the middle finger every time. They require conformity and obedience.

For example, the mentor Glad follows, Dante, is described as having a stick up his rear end, controlling, and capricious in his orders. Supposedly, he thinks he is saving her from a worse fate. Her co-students disagree.

Her lover-in-theory, meanwhile, gathers the crew from Above to form a rescue somehow. When the Fallen create a major attack on Israel, Glad realizes she is witnessing a prophecy in action.

    About the Romance:
    ================
Just as the two lovebirds realize that they both love each other, Gladriel screws up and is banished from both heaven and her love. Book 1 has no spice, just kissing, which is strangely how I imagine angels. Love lost due to one’s own faults is a classic human theme, and I think this is a poignant moment.

    About the Academy:
    ===============
Being kicked out of First Heaven and getting stuck in an auditorium on wooden seats with a hard-nosed teacher and no interest in the subject matter can seem like torture! So can pencil-pushing in a windowless cubby and stacks of paperwork. Glad finds a brainwashing industry here, with teachers determined to instill a desire to corrupt, tempt, and turn humans.

Wow! I’ve read quite a bit of books but I haven’t read a book with this twist on urban fantasy involving angels. This book is definitely a great book for people who like
the world building in sections and not all at once. The story jumps right in and then builds along the way which helps you follow the story so I really liked it. Obviously
this is a no spoiler review but maybe potential in book two for booktok and bookstagram to have new book boyfriends (hehe). This book was honestly a relaxing read

Great start to a new series!
    November 28, 2022
Gladriel and her squadron mates are Cherubim warriors in the Almighty’s army tasked to protect all of his beings, including humans. There are fallen angels, demons, seraphim and more who take to the skies to manipulate others’ lives. Glad and her partner Kessien are attracted to each other and the rest of their squadron knew it before they admitted it. It’s a cute plot line and it adds a touch of sweet romance. When Glad breaks rank to avenge her best friend’s death, she’s called before the Almighty to plead her case, but that’s not going to happen because the Almighty has already decided to expel her from heaven for defying him and vengeance is his! She’s being banished to 3rd Heaven, the home of Morningstar Academy where she’ll receive an introduction to her new life and will be assigned an occupation. The major in charge reports that Glad is going to need an intensive adjustment and the “learning” curve is going to be steep. There’s some humor to be found in the treatment of the “students” by their leaders. Glad has not earned the right to go by her real name so, for now, she answers to Trainee Scum. Every time I heard it I wanted to reach through my phone and throat punch him, but I have to admit that it was a perfect juxtaposition to finally being able to use her name when she proved her worth. Glad is aware of “the prophecy” that is written in books found only in the forbidden section of the library. When she starts to see it play out in front of her eyes, the Iron Dome is protecting Israel from rockets and missiles. Knowing the history of this area makes this story much richer in meaning and characterization. It becomes obvious that this story is a treatise to analyze good and bad, righteousness and evil, angels and demons and the story that results is an absolute gem! I look forward to stories narrated by Sarah Kisko. Her dynamic voice is able to bring each character to life with a smooth pace, excellent intonation and timbre.

Not Your Cookie Cutter Academy Series
    October 30, 2022
This is not your cookie cutter Academy series. The world building in this book is spectacular – I have never seen heaven/hell/angels/demons portrayed in this way and I was truly captivated by it. I enjoyed the dual POV – I always think that adds an extra dimension to a story. It took me a bit to like Glad but I did grow to understand her. The side characters are well written and the cliffhanger ending has me eagerly awaiting book 2.

    God’s Plan? … maybe
    November 5, 2022
So…being a long-term follower of Lee I have airways enjoyed her books. From the Smithson series to the Lullaby series, and recently the Empire series. But Cursed is probably one of my favorites. It just might be one of my favorites I’ve ever read … definitely top 10. As always the writing is superb, but this book has an extra special quality too it. It’s like a new twist on angels and demons and “the fallen.” A different look into Heaven for sure. The interaction between the angels and the fallen is so strenuous you catch yourself biting your nails; and with the demons too. When I read about Gladriel and her character you can’t help but immediately love her. She’s smart, intuitive, snarky … but Wholeheartedly just good. She’s fierce.. doesn’t back down, and is willing to break the rules to stand by her principles. When she is punished by God I was truly devastated. It feels so real when you’re reading… it’s more like reading a diary and not a book of fiction. Lol. I don’t care for reviews that tell you every detail of three book so that’s all I’m going to give c away. Oh and the fact that I love how she carries herself in 2nd Heaven and wins over her three classmates and her obnoxious mentor. I cannot wait for the 2nd book to come out… to find out if Kessien and the other angels find the Prophecy (thanks for just ending it there… sorry not sorry lol) and are able to save Glad and her new friends and the humans and 2nd Heaven. They say God works in mysterious ways and always has a plan. Well Glad getting sent to 2nd Heaven, even though it was a punishment, seems to be something God planned. To use her to save a few of three fallen and earth … maybe. Anyway I truly loved this book.

    Gladriel to the Rescue
    November 6, 2022
Gladriel is what you want from a friend. Even though authorities tell her revenge is taken care of, when nothing happens as soon as possible she takes matters into her own hands. However, when she gets punished for it things don’t seem as black and white as she first thought they were. Maybe there’s something more than blind evil at Morningstar Academy. More than blind belief in Heaven’s own gates. Want to know what it could be? Take a step into a world you thought you knew. Pickup Cursed by the amazingly talented LRW Lee and find out for yourselves just what you would do to make sure the world is balanced.

A well-crafted story and excellent descriptions, could not put it down. Needed to know what would happen next at every turn. I had planned out how much I would read to get it read at a good pace and that pace flew out the window as it oft does when you are so entrenched in a story all you need is more. And what an ending… when is the next one going to be ready?

A Fallen Angel With A Heart
    October 22, 2022
It is Angels vs Demons on steroids! Two warrior Angels who have known each other, and fought side by side against evil for eons, finally realize their love for each other but is it too late. You see Glad has gone her own way and revenged the wounding of her best friend by killing the demons who hurt her. Unfortunately this was after the Almighty warned her that he would be the one to dole out the punishment and that she should not let vengeance enter her heart. Because she disobeyed him she was shorn two wings , deemed a fallen Angel and was sent to the 2nd Heaven, ruled by Lucifer. Her friends, including Kessien vow to find a way to bring her back . Glad has managed to find some friends in 2nd Heaven and after seeing a prophecy come true that Glad had read about seek answers on how to proceed. Kessien and others meet her and agree to look for the prophecy in Heaven if that will help her to survive. This was a very interesting story so far that has many biblical themes and leaves you thirsting for more as it ends with a cliffhanger.

    Hold onto your tail feathers!
    October 28, 2022
I really enjoyed this first installment of the Morningstar Academy series. From the beginning I knew there were going to be some strong-willed and determined characters to get to know. L. R. W. Lee does an excellent job of world building and that allows the reader to focus more on the characters. Our main gal, Glad, is headstrong and the epitome of doing what’s right despite “the rules.” However, we see that sometimes the good guys don’t always get away with doing the right thing. A break in the characters’ group occurs and we see how each react to that. From that point, I felt emotionally connected (insert tears) and was hooked. We get to be in the trenches with Glad and really see her struggle. With those struggles, her perseverance really shines. There was a cliffhanger so I can’t wait for the next book to find out what happens!

This is a brand new series, and I was totally intrigued by the synopsis of this book. First, the world building and the descriptions in this book are absolutely amazing. It just pulls you right into the story. Second, the characters are so well written. My heart was breaking for all of the turmoil our angel squadron went through losing two of their team members in different ways. And I am dying to know the backstories of Glad’s new Fallen companions. This book was an excellent start to what I am sure is going to be an awesome new series. I can’t wait for the next!

A dark fallen angel series starter
    October 21, 2022
I gave this four stars due to the fact the writing itself was very good and while this book wasn’t to my personal taste I could very well see it being appealing to someone else.

There were some harsh religious undertones that I found difficult to handle. It didn’t outright claim to be judo-Christian or not and it didn’t follow it completely just enough to give it the taste of something along the line. I think it was close enough that I would appreciate it being a heads up somewhere in the discription. I may have felt less uncomfortable

If it you are looking for a darker angel themed series that takes part in a judo-Christianish (like i said it just takes flavors from doesn’t actually follows or if it does not well enough for me to want to call it that) This is well written, fairly clean fantasy novel to start with.

  30. Melissa Hatcher

Let me start by saying I love a good Angel and Demon fantasy! I also really love well written literature. The two don’t always come together so beautifully. However, I can count on LRW Lee to make that happen.

She builds worlds with words so well you can feel the world around you. In this first book of her new Morningstar Academy series we meet Gladriel. She and her squad, a group of angels that fight against demons. We join her on her journey from angel to “Fallen”.

So now she is struggling with her previous self that protected human kind and her new fallen self that is working to corrupt humanity. Here is where the good twists get going, and Lee does that so well. I just love how you can feel something coming but can’t quite predict what is going to happen!

I would recommend this is book if you like PNR, angels and demons, fallen angels, or really like fantasy. It is well told, exciting, and full of twists and turns that will keep you on your toes. And the next comes out in just a couple of weeks, I cannot wait for Damned!

  31. Madeleine

My first book by this author. The blurb really caught my attention. I love PNR but, especially when it comes to Angels & Demons. The story this author told was very good and well thought out.

I enjoyed listening to the audio of this book. The narrator, Sarah Kisko did a great job with Glad and the other angels/fallen. She brought a little something extra to the audiobook. I enjoyed the book part as well. If I had young teenagers, I’d be cool with them reading this too. So far, the Angels have been complete angles. It’s the first book I’ve read, other than the bible, where “the almighty” actually appears. And the prophecy they are talking about is totally in the bible. (Thank You for the year I did in a Bible Study class and we focused on Revelations for quite a while). But whether you’ve read the bible, or not. Whether you are a fan or not, this is still a really good fantasy book. It’s not a religious book. The story just has a few parallels.
The book held my attention the whole time. I managed to finish it in one day. And I thoroughly enjoyed the whole book and I can’t wait for #2!! I would LOVE if she continued with this one for a while!

This book so easy to get into, a quick and fast paced read! The audiobook narrators were wonderful as well!
This was the first book I’ve read by this author and it didn’t disappoint, I’ll definitely be reading more in the future.
I wish it was longer, I really l loved the main character and I have a feeling we are going to get a fantastic found family in the future!

I am someone who adores astronomy, space, stars and galaxies. It was a pleasant surprise when I discovered this book had elects incorporated inside, and I loved it! I also liked the many layers to the different kinds of universes, second heavens and hells, and an academy that harboured the most evil kinds of creatures and species that loathed humans. When Gladriel our fmc landed inside Morningstar Academy along with her love interest Cassian, I was eager to read about their story at their time there.

Gladriel is a rebellious fmc with a mind of her own and rules by her own justice system which I found interesting. I loved how she handled what life threw at her, and how she cared for her loved ones and would do anything for, even go against god himself for. Cassian, I couldn’t connect with just yet, but I have a feeling I will in book 2. They’re relationship was a slowburn which is my absolute favourite kind, so there isn’t much to say on it in this moment as it’s going to develop further in book two and really give us more of an insight into their relationship.

The pacing was a little slow at the start, but by the end I was eager to get my hands on book 2!

A tale of good versus evil, of angels and demons. These two books (Cursed and Damned) are books that the reader will be fully immersed in from the first page. I love that this was offered as two-in-one, because this is one of those series that you can’t really walk away from after you finish the last page of the first book.

    Excellent writing, world-building and story-telling.

I’m blessed to have read Cursed!

In this thought-provoking escape into a world of angels, demons, and the fallen that hadn’t intended on dropping out of the third heaven, readers are faced with an interesting twist on a celestial trope.

Gladriel, a heavenly warrior, exacts revenge when demons mutilate her best friend. In the process of taking things into her own hands, Glad loses the privilege of remaining a citizen of the celestial city and is banished to second heaven. There, she is placed at Morningstar Academy to train for service to the enemy of all enemies, Lucifer. Apocalyptic events of global proportions begin to unfold, and Gladriel’s frustration at not being able to assist humans, like she once did with her beloved squadron, climbs to new heights. As a matter of fact, she’s now punished for resisting orders to harm the mortals she cares about.

Are the consequences of Glad’s actions equal to her crimes, or does The Almighty have some tricks up His sleeves, and she’s exactly where she needs to be to help save the lost, whether they are human or others who’ve fallen short of The Glory. Angels desire to look into these things, and so do I.

    L. R. W. Lee wraps this story up with a bow and hot chocolate, but also a teaser making me anxious to read the next installment. Damned if I don’t!.

These books are really awesome if you are into fallen angels, the old story about good vs evil and so on, but with a very interesting twist.

The storyline is engaging and follows Glad, a sweet, but recently fallen angel. The first book shows you what’s like their day to day in “heaven” and then what’s going on “downstairs”.

The second book is more focused about the day to day in “hell” and what the fallen angels have to go through when they arrive.

Glad is a very sassy angel, but she has this constant struggle to do good even when “God” has sent her there and her friends are doing the impossible to save the human race and also get redemption for Glad so she can go back to “heaven”

As I said, the story is so original and captivating that I can’t wait to follow what’s next to our angels.
