Finally its here! I have been in an awful book slump. I couldn’t read anything for almost 7 months! But when I heard L.R.W. Lee was coming out with a new series I knew it would get me out of my funk. And that it did! I love the characters and the story building Lee creates in her novels. Pell is one of the first characters I’ve been able to really relate to…but that could just be because I too have an alter ego by the name of Grace who makes her appearance at the worst possible times! The inner monologue Pell has throughout the book made me laugh on more than one occasion. Lee’s wit and sense of humor she gives to these characters make them feel like actual beings come to life. Her vivid descriptions and unique characters make you forget your worries and cares for a bit. Something I really needed during this crazy year we call 2020. I am so excited to see this new world Lee takes us on and want to ask, do we really have to wait 8 more weeks to learn what happens to Pell and Harpoc?! I need it now!I can’t recommend this book enough. 100/10 i recommend to anyone looking for a great read.

Empire of Ash is the first book in a new series by L.R.W. Lee and I knew I was going to love it before I even read it. The story follows an archeologist named Pellucid (Pell, for short) as she uncovers secrets hidden in her Mycenae, Greece dig. She meets a handsome stranger, who steps out of shadows, and wants to help her fix a few accidental mistakes she made since unearthing the secrets.This book is nonstop action, adventure, and just so much fun to read. Lee has a way of writing that is effortless and immersive in her storytelling. The characters are relatable, I loved Pell’s inner monologue. It sounded a lot like somethings I tell myself on a regular basis. All the others that come into the story just add a richness and makes you want to know more about them.I was so drawn into this world that I immediately picked up book 2: Empire of Secrets!

Both main characters were very intriguing. The heroine have spunk and I like the girl to have a backbone. And this one have plenty. Sarah Kisko made it more enjoyable with her narration. Five stars for her without a doubt. If you like reading paranormal romance, check this one out. You will not be disappointed. It is different from some of the paranormal I enjoyed reading before. Then you have the mysterious Harpoc who never really get to know until the end of the book. World building was non existent and the character building was just as bad. Empire of Ash is the first book I read by the author and while the plot sounded great, I, unfortunately, didn’t like the book :(Worldbuilding was good, scenes and environments were clear and detailed. As a fan of archaeology (and mythology), it was fun to read about the sites they explored, not to mention the mythological beings/people they encountered. Character development was decent. We walked alongside Pell (short for Pellucid), an archaeologist, as she tries to undo the mess she caused by reading an ancient scroll she just found. Pell is, in my opinion, a pretty particular person with a lot of inner dialogue (like… a lot a lot). That, I could get on board with, but what bothered me the most was that she doesn’t feel or act her age but more like a teenager. Add that to the insistent chatter of her inner dialogue and … yeah, I really didn’t connect with her.Harpoc, our mystery man in a leather jacket, was well fleshed out and out of the two, strangely enough, felt more real and believable. While he was (and yes, still remains) a mystery, he does open up more and more to Pell. Pacing and flow were good. A nice balance between conversation and action to keep the story moving forward.There were no (noticeable) errors and there was no sex described in this book (if that is important to you).I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and all in all I can say that unfortunately, this wasn’t my cup of tea. It just felt unpolished and slightly too teens/ya for me. However, if the plot sounds good be sure to give the sample a try, it might be something for you!

As their story unfolds, you find yourself on the edge of your seat yearning for more.The chemistry between Pell and Harp is undeniable. Sigh. I hate it but I love it: slow-burn is always the *best* and the wait is *always* worth it. I was getting a serious Laura Thalassa vibe with these two!I was so excited when I found out Harpoc’s real identity, where he came from… even more excited when the book ended and I realized where the next installment in the series would take us! This is my first book by this author, it won’t be the last – I loved it. The writing style is good and the plot which tells us all about Pellucid (Pell) Rose she’s a young archaeologist excavating a site in Greece who discovers a chamber packed with scrolls, meant to remain buried, then somehow awakens a mythical creature is so well thought out and has such great world-building that you easily imagine yourself there. The two main characters Harpoc and Pell are very well defined and work well together. This is a great first book in the series, lots of action, magic, romance. I loved this book so much. And this narrator did a great job as the voice. She told this story perfectly. If you are a history fan like me you will love how this author took history and fantasy and combined them. Pell is a woman trying to prove herself in the archaeology field run by men. First off, I loved her. She was so cool and I loved the fighter she was. Not just for herself, but others. She doesn’t put up with lies. She uncovers what she thinks is the biggest find in history and is going to give her the credit she has been fighting for. But then she meets Harpoc. He’s a stranger to her and ends up being a keeper of secrets. Little does Pell realize, she has just created a giant mess they have to clean up. Throw in a jealous colleague who is a scumbag, action, adventure, hard choices, secrets revealed (literally), and some romance and you have one epic start to a series. I highly suggest this book. You won’t be disappointed.

Like all her books this one definitely did not disappoint. The story line was captivating. The struggles Pell experiences as an archeologist is stunning yet doesnt stop her, making her fight harder. I love archaeology, geography and history. Reading about a young female archaeologist was very interesting including the side bar discrimination she faces with a few colleagues. I want to listen to the rest of the series to see how Pell and the stranger flush things out between her discovery and their relationship. I did think there was a bit of a longer pause between chapters than I am used to, I kept thinking someone was calling me and interrupting the audiobook but it wouldn’t prevent me from listening to the rest of the books.

I’ve always been fascinated by ancient Egypt. In “Empire of Ash,” you’re transported with Pell into archeological finds and get to take a peek inside the excavations to see what mysteries lie within. Pell has a curious but determined personality and I felt she is easy to understand. Harpoc on the other hand is evasive yet protective. Charming yet complicated, and “really, really ridiculously good looking.” With Pell, what you see is what you get…or is it? I look forward to finding out in the next book what secrets Pell unknowingly holds.

Received ARC for honest review. Rated 3.5-4 stars. If you like secrets, hot mysterious men, snarky independent heroines, and mythology, then Empire of Ash should make your reading list. L.R.W. Lee spins a clever archeology/mythology romance that will leave fans of Laura Thalassa, C.N. Crawford, and Lindsey Hall intrigued and waiting for more. Right off the bat, Lee introduces our leading lady Pellucid Rose, or Pell as we should call her, and sets the ball rolling with her charm, wit, and intelligence. After finding the archeological discovery of the century, Pell encounters the sexy, mysterious man she deems Crazy Guy. With his announcement that she has unleashed a sphinx (that’s right A SPHINX) on the world and that they must put a stop to it before people end up hurt or dead, their adventure takes off. Initially, I wasn’t sure if I was taken in with the story. I liked the chemistry between Pell and the mysterious Crazy Guy and the details that Lee described never crossed the line of too much, always staying at just enough. I thought, eh it was probably a 2.5-3 stars book. But then I realized that I had finished the book in one sitting and stayed up wayyy late to do so, something a 2.5-3 star book could never make me do because I absolutely adore sleep and have to get up wayy too early. What got me wasn’t necessarily the new take on mythology that Lee spun or even the witty banter of Pell and Crazy Guy (although I seriously love witty banter and it can make or break a book for me), it was the way Lee spun secrets and mystery into the story. Every page left you wondering and yearning for more. More about Crazy Guy, more about secret magic, more about Pell herself, and the list goes on. Sometimes it can be hard to capture the attention of a reader, so authors withhold information. However, many can go too far and not give you enough information to keep your attention captured. Lee walks this line with finesse and what I thought was going to be an okay book turned into an actually really enjoyable read. I have Kindle Unlimited, so access to literally tons of books that are unique in their own way, but how Lee spins secrecy so well into her story is something unique that I have not really come across before, and I read a lot. I have some guesses as to what secrets Lee will reveal as the series progresses, but the wonderful part of her writing in this story is that I don’t know for sure if my guesses will play out. There is still a whole lot of mystery wrapped up in this story that I cannot wait to uncover.My advice: give this book a chance. You might initially be thinking, eh it’s okay but I don’t know if it should take my time when I have 20+ other books to read (amen, been there and still there), BUT if you keep going just a little bit past when you think that, you will find yourself devouring the rest of Pell and Crazy Guy’s story. At least that is what happened for me. I rate it 3.5-4 stars because of that initial lull, but the end result certainly makes it worth that 4 stars. So seriously, just read it so you can either prove me wrong or joining me in yearning for the secrets Lee will eventually reveal.

Growing up I loved all things Greek mythology and a really enjoy paranormal romance books so when I read the description for Empire of Ash, I was very intrigued. Empire of Ash tells the story of Pell, our heroine archeologist who discovers a secret while on a dig and Harpoc, a secretive but super sexy man who mysteriously appear in her life. Adventure, mystery and a splash of romance follows in an action packed book full of twists. Characters: Pell: 25 year old archeologist who has been dedicated to her profession for years at the expense of her personal life. She is down to Earth and reserved but not naive. She had a rough childhood and has issues with interpersonal relationship in her life as she just has not had the opportunity for those experiences. Her constant running inner dialogue is quite funny, though can be a bit repetitive at times. Pell is not your typical heroine but does a lot of growing in this book and is very relatable. Harpoc: Mysterious, sexy and witty leading man who has a million secrets. He appears out of nowhere during a dig and becomes an important part of Pell’s life. Tall, dark, sexy and charming, he seems very attractive. He has many secrets and I do wish a few more of them were revealed in this book; here’s to hoping we learn more in book 2!World building: The story starts in Greece but jumps around quite a few other European countries. There is a hefty dose of Greek and Egyptian mythology that I really enjoyed, anyone who has read any mythology will recognize the stories and enjoy how they are integrated into the plot. We learn some of Pell’s backstory but I wish we had learned more about her and especially about Harpoc. Overall good world building but I do wish it was slightly more fleshed out and details, perhaps we will see more of that in book 2.Plot: Mostly an action driven plot with various events driving the story but some character driven advancements as well. Very excited without seeming too unrealistic. There is definitely as attraction between Pell and Harpoc but calling it a full romance would be stretch. I do wish there was more relationship building between the two of them and all of his secrets do get a bit old after a time. As above I also felt that Pell’s inner monologue got a bit repetitive and at times distracting from the plot.If you like reading paranormal stories with Greek and Egyptian mythology woven in, adventure, huge mysteries, and splash of romance, then I highly recommend Empire of Ash. I can’t wait to read the second book in October to learn more about Pell and Harpoc and hopefully get Harpoc to spill some of his secrets!

Pellucid Rose is a devoted archaeologist on a dig in Greece, when she finds what appears to be an ancient antiquity. She excitedly translates the hieroglyphics and unleashes a sphinx onto the world. Black smoke surrounds her and a very handsome, mysterious man appears. He is a calming influence on Pell and he begins to tell his story. First, he informs Pell that, since she is responsible for the sphinx’s release into the world, she’s the one who has to recapture it and take it back where it belongs. It’s a dangerous mission and Pell comes to understand that there are more secrets than she could ever expect. She still doesn’t know who he is and gives him names like Mr. Cocky Pants, Crazy Guy, but it’s really Harpoc and he’s the god of secrets. As they travel around the globe, recovering and replacing secrets, there’s an attraction brewing between Harpoc and Pell that is sweet and still mysterious. I got a little annoyed with Pell’s inner voice, especially when she whined or shouted over Pell. And I didn’t like the addition of the messed up world and the corrupt politicians. It came up at the beginning and it was still a major point at the end. I want to be immersed in a fantasy, especially one that is woven this well. Pell and Harpoc are wonderfully fleshed out and have personalities that jump off the page. They’re secretive and and amusing as they confront enemies who seek to destroy the god of secrets’ power. Sarah Kisko does an excellent job with the narration. The voices are clear and dynamic as she brings each character to life!

I put off reading this book for a while because of my past experience with this authors books. I was really worried that I wouldn’t like this one or it would drag on. I felt like this story could receive 3.5 stars but I like the hint of romance and history in this story helped it to 4 stars. This book took me almost a week to read which is slow for me lately.Honestly Pell irritated me a bit. Her and her subconscious talking to each other was distracting and a little unnecessary in my opinion.Her job as an archeologist sounded cool but ended abruptly within a few chapters. Now she’s job less and tripskipping around the world without knowing what’s going to happen next.Some of the characters in the beginning I thought would have more meaning/or be included more in the story but the rest of the story is just mainly Pell and Harpoc with side characters here and there. Harpoc was an interesting character. He wanted Pell to trust him but he wouldn’t tell her anything unless she needed to know it. Also I really wanted to understand why she has seen his eyes all this time but I guess I will have to read the second one eventually to find out.This is a super slow burn fantasy novel with a bit of romance thrown in towards the end. I would probably recommend this story especially if you liked her other novels.

So I’ll start by saying I was offered this audio in exchange for an honest review. This is a YA fantasy novel which is not my usual genre I read, but both my sons are avid readers and I wanted to see if this would be a good book for them.I know neither of them will read it because it’s all from a female point of view and they are not at the the maturity level for this book. However, as a mom of a teen I would most definitely recommend it for a teen who’s looking for that feel of Percy Jackson but more from a female POV. There is a cliffhanger, or more of a 3 book series that I think just cuts off at a point.If you buy this book, you’ll want to buy the next. I have not reviewed it to say if there’s any adult content (sex, etc) but this book had nothing explicit which is perfect for teen, IMHO.I really loved the plot, storyline was good and the narration was excellent. she did a fantastic job voicing multiple characters including male and I found her voice perfect for what this lead character.

Empire of Ash is a fun and light young adult read. I’d probably read anything with Greek mythology, so that aspect drew me right in. Pellucid is a feisty, funny main character, but I appreciate that she still kept her wits about her and didn’t really fall into the exaggerated, over-the-top-snarky paranormal heroine trap. I also appreciate the unique plot (or, at least, I haven’t read anything like this story before).There were a few things I found slightly strange, such as how a god who is eons of years old acts like a regular twenty-something-year-old guy. Or how the human authorities weren’t more involved in some of Pell’s not-super-legal-or-particularly-discreet adventures. But, honestly, I could let those slide, because it didn’t seem like Empire of Ash was really going for a realistic, nitty-gritty story, it seemed to be a fun, escapist paranormal story, and I’m all for those when I’m in the right mood. I’m intrigued by where the story is going, and I have a few guesses about some of Harpoc’s hinted-at secrets that I’m hanging on to and that I hope to discover in the next book. I also want to learn more about Harpoc’s character in particular, because I suspect he has quite a few stories to tell and facets to reveal! Overall, I enjoyed Empire of Ash, and I look forward to the next installment!

Empire of Ash is the first installment of a young adult series following Pell, a snarky, independent, hard working archaeologist who has uncovered an astonishing find. This find leads her down an unexpected journey with a dark and handsome stranger with lots of secrets who just happens to have the same eyes that have been guiding her throughout her life. Together, the two of them must face unimaginable odds as they clean up the mythological messes left in the wake of Pell’s discovery. As the two grow close, Pell becomes determined to uncover the stranger’s secrets. Little does she know what she is about to discover.Pell has lived a very complicated and difficult life which has shaped her into the young woman she is today. The author uses this backstory to aid in character development. This book has a heavy focus on mythology and that plays a vital role in storytelling. The author brings her own versions of mythological beings from sphinx to harpies. As she has done with her other series, she lays a good foundation for world building. Looking forward to seeing where she takes things next. I recommend this book for anyone with an interest young adult fantasy with a mythological twist.

I’m not sure what I liked most about this book – the adventure, the jet-setting, or the history! Truly, there is a bit of everything in Empire of Ash and hints of even more. Between the descriptions of exotic locales and explanations of ancient myths and history, I was fully engrossed in the book and probably learned more than I ever did in school! I fully enjoyed the interaction between Pell and Harpoc and can’t wait to read more about them. I though Pell was well written as a whole character, and liked getting to know her gradually throughout the story. Harpoc was also well thought out, but he remains a big mystery and I can’t wait to know more about him. I did appreciate the way in which bits and pieces of his personality began to emerge throughout the story.
